I grew up in a Cuban household where we were always entertaining guests. Throwing dinner parties is our family specialty and cocktails are always flowing.
While I'm setting up for a party I like to play oldies, like The Shirelles, but once my friends arrive I love the Pandora station ‘Hip-Hop BBQ’, which is all old school hip hop. Trust me, it’s amazing!
My signature cocktail depends on what mood I'm in. If I’m having a casual night with friends then I always go for a Moscow Mule with ginger beer, lime, mint and vodka. If I'm feeling fancy then I’ll make a dirty martini…EXTRA dirty. I prefer my martinis with Chopin vodka, shaken hard – I need to see some ice crystals. Make sure you have a cocktail shaker on hand. Also, having great glassware can elevate even a simple drink, like a vodka soda, into a fancy cocktail.
Living in New York means that I don't get to see my friends and family in LA very often, so whenever I'm home I try to get all of my friends together for drinks. Recently, I had a themed taco night and made a huge batch of margaritas - we ended up on the floor of my living-room reminiscing.
For work I meet a lot of new people so I’ve gotten used to socializing. When it comes to entertaining, the more the merrier! But, always be prepared for more company with the right amount of alcohol and food; there’s nothing worse than going to a party and having it end early because there isn't enough liquor. More drinks means more socializing, which equals a successful party.
I also travel a lot for work, so when I’m in town I try to have my friends over as much as possible. I use fun drinks and delicious food to make that time a bit special. I’ve been influenced by TV chefs like Ina Garten and Nigella Lawson; their relaxing style of cooking and hosting friends is something that I strive for every time I’m entertaining.
